Using Your Phone as a Wireless Router
Enjoy your own personal Wi-Fi network anytime, anywhere. With a few easy steps, your phone becomes a wireless router, sharing its data connection with your laptop over a secure network.
Before you use your phone as a wireless router, make sure that:
  • Your phone has a SIM card installed and has an active 3G/GPRS/EDGE data connection.
  • The computer you want to connect to the phone's wireless router has a built-in or an external Wi-Fi adapter.

Setting up your phone as a wireless router

  1. Tap Start > Wi-Fi Router.
  2. The first time you open Wi-Fi Router, a brief introduction describing the application is displayed. Tap Next.
  3. On the Wi-Fi Router screen, set up the phone's Wi-Fi network by entering a Network name and a 10-digit WEP key. You can also use the provided default Network name and WEP key.
  4. In Internet Connection, select the data connection your phone uses to access the Internet, and then tap Start.
When the phone is ready to accept connections, it displays instructions on how to connect your computer to the Wi-Fi network. When you connect your computer, the instructions disappear and the Wi-Fi Router screen is displayed again. TapHelp to display the connection instructions again.

Connecting your computer to your phone's Wi-Fi network

  1. On your computer, click Start > Connect To (Windows Vista) or click Start > Connect To > Wireless Network Connection (Windows XP).
  2. In the Connect to a network dialog box, select the name of your phone's Wi-Fi network, and then click Connect.
    If the phone Wi-Fi network did not show up in the list, refresh the list of available networks.
  3. Enter the WEP key you used when setting up the phone's Wi-Fi network, and then click Connect.

Turning your phone's Wi-Fi network on or off

When you do not need the phone's Wi-Fi network, tap Stop on the Wi-Fi Router screen to turn it off.
You can also easily turn the phone's Wi-Fi network on and off in Comm Manager.
  1. Tap Start > Settings > Wireless controls.
  2. Tap the Off/On slider at the right side of the Wi-Fi Router item. When the wireless router starts and is ready to accept connections, the wireless network name and WEP key are displayed.
  3. When you do not need the phone's Wi-Fi network, tap the Off/On slider again to turn it off.
